Characteristics of China's aerial work platform industry
(1)Multiple varieties and small batches.Due to the diverse product demands across industries such as street lighting,horticulture,power,petrochemical,and communication,the usage of products varies significantly.There are substantial differences in product specifications,technical parameters,and other indicators.The industry products exhibit strong professionalism,with prominent personalized requirements,and small-scale niche markets characterized by numerous varieties and specifications.Consequently,the production batch size for each specification of product is relatively small.
(2)The product has high technical requirements and high added value.Researchers from the Smart Research Data Research Center stated that aerial work platform products involve multiple technical fields such as automotive,machinery,electrical,computer,and automation,making them typical technology-intensive products.Customers have high requirements for product safety and operability,and enterprises must possess strong research and development capabilities to meet customer needs.At the same time,products,especially those with large operating heights,for the electric power industry,and customized products with special requirements,usually have high unit value and high added value.
(3)Suitable for the development of professional small and medium-sized enterprises.The aerial work platform industry is a small industry characterized by a wide range of products,high specialization,high technological content,high safety requirements,and differentiated demand.Generally,it is difficult to achieve large-scale production with energy-tailored single-specification products,making it suitable for the development of professional small and medium-sized enterprises.Large enterprises cannot invest corresponding technological research and development resources,market development resources,and management efforts as a leading industry,and industry characteristics limit the entry of large enterprises.For example,large enterprises such as XCMG and Zoomlion in China also entered the aerial work platform industry in the mid-1990s and early 2000s.After years of operation,Zoomlion currently has only five product announcements,with an annual sales volume of about 20 units,and XCMG's annual sales volume is only about 20 units.In the international aerial work platform field,the top ten manufacturers focus on aerial work platforms and related special vehicles.
(4)High entry barriers in the industry.As special vehicles belong to the automotive industry,China has strict regulations on enterprise access,registered capital,foreign investment ratio,product registration,certification,inspection,defect recall,etc.in the special vehicle industry.At the same time,due to the high entry barriers in the power,municipal,horticulture,and construction industries,the access to special vehicles is relatively high.Furthermore,as the power,municipal,horticulture,and transportation industries are the main applications of aerial work platforms,customers are primarily government agencies and large state-owned enterprises.The procurement system has been implemented in the supplier access system and special maintenance system,with the latter having a strong dependence on supplier services.Therefore,the aerial work platform industry in China has high entry barriers.
(5)Seasonal demand is more pronounced.Users of aerial work platforms are primarily concentrated in the power,municipal,and horticulture industries.Due to the budget management and procurement systems of national administrative agencies and large state-owned enterprises such as power companies,the shipment volume of the aerial work platform industry in the fourth quarter accounts for approximately 40%of the entire year.
According to the announcement of aerial work platform products by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology,as of December 31,2010,there were a total of 50 manufacturers in China's aerial work platform industry.Generally speaking,the production scale of enterprises is relatively small.In 2009,only 7 enterprises had annual sales exceeding 50 units.Except for Company and Hangzhou Aizhi,which had annual sales exceeding 400 units,the other 5 enterprises had sales ranging from 50 to 130 units.The industry competition pattern has basically taken shape.
Taking the folding boom product with an operating height of 14 meters as an example,most aerial work platform companies are capable of producing it,with ample product supply and fierce market competition.However,high-end products such as hybrid booms are limited by technical capabilities,and the number of companies that master high-end research and development,design,and manufacturing technology is limited.
